Dear Valued Partners

It is with great sadness we announce that Nurturing Orphans of AIDS for Humanity (Noah) will be closing its operations on the 28th June 2013.

At the Board Meeting held on the 28th May 2013 in Johannesburg it became apparent that Noah’s funding situation is untenable. There has been a contraction in donations over the last months which has made it impossible for Noah to responsibly continue its work.

What unrestricted funds are available have now been directed towards a structured close down focussed on the best interests of the 23 Arks currently working with Noah. These Arks do not close with Noah. Their participation in the Noah model has equipped them with the foundations for sustainability. This time will be used to link these 23 Arks and their stakeholders as much as possible to other NGOs, networks, and resource centres in their localities, as well as to prepare them for their pre-mature, but always intended, graduation to independence of Noah.

We take this opportunity to not only share this news with you but to thank all our Partner Communities, Donors, Government Partners, NGO partners, Staff and all Stakeholders for the wonderful contribution they have made towards empowering communities to better protect and provide for their orphan and vulnerable children.

While Noah prepares to wind down please join us in the celebration of the impact Noah has made to over 60 000 children, through its work with 112 Arks, over its more than 10 years of operation. And to recognise that the true sustainability lies in the impact that will carry through the life trajectories of these 60 000 children, into their adulthood, and parenthood that will resonate through their contribution to their children, their communities, and our country long after Noah and its Arks are resigned to the archives of the South African development conscience.

We call on you to continue the contribution you have made through Noah in some other way as it remains vital (in these uncertain economic times, perhaps more than ever) that our vulnerable children are supported.

All email and telephonic channels as well as physical addresses will remain as are until the 28th of June 2013. Any significant or important changes will be posted on the Noah website (www.noahcommunity.org) or the Noah Twitter profile (@Noahcommunity).

We thank you again on behalf of our community partners and all our wonderful staff over the years for your contribution to this mission.

Yours Sincerely,

Thorin Roberts,
Chief Executive Officer

A brief history of how the CBO started:

The Project was initiated in 2005 at Qedizaba Primary School, with the assistance of the CBO Development Officer, Mrs Phumzile Nyembe. The teaching personnel were the first to operate on a school-based level and so proceeded to assess and register orphans/vulnerable children from the neighbouring schools. The Principal of Qedizaba Primary School and local community leaders played an important role in the initial stages of establishment and continue to offer support to the CBO.

As is the case with most communities in KZN, the HIV/AIDS prevalence is high and children are often left vulnerable and in the care of their relatives who are already struggling financially.

Services offered:

Daily meals- ensuring that children receive at least one daily nutritious meal

Psychosocial support- particularly for children dealing with death and loss and HIV/AIDS

Applications for social grants and birth certificates

Educational support and recreational activities

Highlights:

Hilldrop Heritage Church/School continues to donate groceries.

Waterval Correctional Services donates Ox or sometimes Pig offals.

Child Activity Coordinator Nomasonto Buthelezi started training under NCCW and has

implemented dimension of development e.g. physically, emotionally, socially and cognitive.

The CBO has a committed team of volunteers.

The CBO staff attended the Noah Empowered Child Conference

The CBO staff attended a Jamboree which was a great opportunity to network with service

providers and a sharing of knowledge.

Volunteers and committee members participated in the recognition day which boosted their morale

The CBO staff has participated in numerous training workshops that have enabled them to offer best services to the children.

Challenges:

The CBO needs electricity connected in the office and dining facilities.

Wish List:

Ten dining tables

Store room for garden equipment and kid’s toys

School shoes for the children

GCS held a golf day in celebration of their 25th Anniversary on 19th April 2013 at the Bryanston Country Club with clients, colleagues and friends. As part of the golf day GCS together with Food and Trees for Africa arranged a raffle to collect money for GCS’s primary charity, Noah’s Ark Orange Farm.Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) is a South African social enterprise that realises sustainable development through greening (trees and bamboo), climate change action, sustainable natural resource management, organic farming and permaculture food security programmes.
Noah’s Ark Orange Farm is one of a few aftercare facilities for children in the Orange Farm community. They support up to 180 children in the area, providing a meal after school and supervised homework. The organisation is run by Ben Nkosi and his team of dedicated volunteers.

Noah’s Ark Orange Farm is supported by the international charity organisation Noah. GCS keeps Noah informed about all our activities at Orange Farm and has received very positive feedback from the representatives at Noah.GCS managed with the terrific generosity of the golf day attendees to raise R6170.00 for FTFA. This money will be used to buy seedlings for the vegetable garden established by GCS, through FTFA, at Noah’s Ark Orange Farm in June 2012.

The vegetable garden since establishment has been very well maintained and stocked where possible with new seedlings from the community. The additional funding for seedlings through FTFA will assist to maintain the garden. FTFA will ensure suitable seedlings are bought and planted correctly, making certain the funding is appropriately utilised.

Children keeping warm with their blankets

Since June 2012 GCS has assisted in connecting the toilet facilities at Noah’s Ark Orange Farm and in January 2013 organised school stationary packs for each of the 180 children. Each pack came in a box and consisted of two school exercise books, three pencils, one sharpener, one large eraser, one ruler and a pencil bag.As part of the funds generated from the GCS golf day, GCS was able to purchase 200 fleece blankets (1 m x 1.5 m). These blankets were given to Ben, his team and the children on the 17th May 2013. Most of the children’s homes have no heating and these blankets were much appreciated by all.
GCS is very proud to be able to help this small community project. The dedication from Ben and his team ensure that this is a sustainable project where the contributions from GCS and other organisations are put towards maximum benefit of the children who rely on this facility. It is very rewarding each time we visit to see that the garden is well maintained, the toilet facilities are in working order and the stationary supplies are being used by the children.
